The staff were very professional and easy to talk to. They didn't mind me accompanying the tech as he went through the diagnostic process. Once the vacuum leak test revealed that my system was actually tight as a drum with zero leaks anywhere (a huge relief but also added to the boost loss mystery), the technician decided to investigate other possible causes. He had me rev the engine while he measured boost via a manual gauge, then while he inspected the bypass valve.

Unbelievably, he was able to notice minuscule score marks on the pivot arm for the bypass valve where it was making contact with the throttle body bracket. This bracket was just loose enough to periodically flex and make contact with the bypass valve. Fixing this was as simple as loosening the bracket, moving it back where it should have been, and re-torquing it back down. It was a matter of less than a millimeter!

It was an extremely simple fix for a problem that had been plaguing me for weeks. I could have taken it to a dozen other shops and they never would have noticed the problem- I sure hadn't noticed it and I'd peeked at the bypass valve on more than a few occasions. I was more than happy to pay the very reasonable shop rate for the fix, as well as the knowledge that my vacuum system is in tip-top shape. I also got the peace of mind knowing that I can finally take my car to a shop that I can trust with it.
