My wife and I decided to have our taxes done by an accountant for the first time this year. I met with Tom Larson, one of the accountants that works for Renita Owens. He quoted me a price and said unless something drastic came up, that would be the price. Before doing your taxes, they make you sign a sheet that basically amounts to signing a blank check because it says that you are agreeing to use only them to prepare your returns and they can charge you whatever they want. In the first meeting Tom Larson insisted we qualified for tax credits that we did not. When dropping off our materials later I had to point out the IRS website contradicting what he said. The first set of returns we received from them said they were prepared by someone else in the office that is not a CPA. The name changed once I complained about this. When I finally went to sign the papers and pay, the bill was nearly twice what I had been quoted. I inquired and was told that after the returns were filed they would e-mail me an itemized list of dates and hours that were spent in excess of the normal amount that would be spent. I think it is reasonable to expect if the price is going to be drastically different that they inform you before doing the extra research, but they certainly do not do that. As least with a list I could see that they did put in extra time and were not just charging me whatever they wanted. After a couple of weeks and several e-mails I received an e-mail from Renita Owens (I never heard from Tom Larson again) saying they spent a lot of extra time on my return. She would not provide any details though. It is quite possible they did spend extra time, but the way they have their practice set up it is easy for them to rip people off! The tax returns were not done in an impressive way; every deduction they found were ones we knew about. In fact, we had to tell them of several they had overlooked. I would not use them again and will be reporting their practices to the Better Business Bureau as well as the South Carolina Board of Accountancy.
I really appreciate the personable, quality service provided by this firm. Renita has helped me with some very complicated issues, and I feel I can trust her with my business. Also, Sharon is very friendly and helpful everytime I call with questions or walk in the door.
